Unlike a road kit, the motocross equipment has many and varied protection elements. In this sense, we find accessories that are more familiar to us than others, such as undergarments, knee pads, girdle, boots, bib, cervical collar, in addition to the shirt-pants, gloves, helmet and off-goggles set. Road, among others. In this article we want to show the importance of all these elements that we have mentioned for our ongoing comfort; from socks to glasses, and above all, that we keep in mind the order we must follow to equip ourselves correctly. And everything has a reason!
We help you making your motorcycle look good with MotoXart on your side and enjoy quality of service along with quick delivery.
Undergarments
When it comes to equipping ourselves, we must start with the undergarments. Depending on the ambient temperature, we should consider wearing thermal underwear (for winter) and with optimal ventilation (especially for summer), since the practice of motocross requires very important physical wear. These garments must be very flexible and comfortable, to the point of forgetting that we wear them once we go by motorcycle.
First of all, we will start with the knee meshes. Its objective is to offer a pleasant contact for the skin, while avoiding direct friction with the kneepad and its joint. These meshes are designed for very bulky knee pads, such as orthopedics, which can damage our skin in the event of a continuous rubbing. We must also remember that there are long socks, as meshes, which replace the knee brace.
Once we have the meshes on, it will be time to put on the protections for the knees, trying to avoid direct contact of the knee with the leg, especially if we use a bulky protection, such as orthopedic knee pads.
As for the inner shirt, it is highly recommended to wear one, regardless of the outside temperature. The inner shirt offers a pleasant touch to the body and minimises possible friction with torso protections, such as the bib or cervical collar. In this sense, there are different types of t-shirt on the market, some more breathable and others with better thermal protection, which we must use depending on the outside temperature. We must emphasise the need for underwear to be hyperventilated, since motocross is one of the sports on two wheels that implies greater physical wear.
Pants
Once we have on the underwear and the protections of the tied knees, it is time for the pants. When acquiring this motocross garment, we must keep in mind the type of knee brace we usually use, as this should always go below the pants. In this sense, wider pants are recommended so that they can house the protections in the knee area. In the case that we use orthopedic knee pads (the bulkiest), we must opt for high-end pants, which already have very elastic areas planned for optimal freedom of movement. The pants are also useful for proper protection of the knee pads to wear and friction, extending their useful life.
Boots
Putting on motocross boots is perhaps the action that usually costs the most, both for its rigidity and weight. And to minimise our effort, it is important that at the top we do not wear equipment that limits our movements, such as the bib or girdle. Motocross boots should consider minimising our effort when putting them on and taking them off. To do this, the micrometric system is usually used as an easier and faster closing of the foot. Of course, to tie them properly, we must manipulate the closures from bottom to top, both at the time of fastening them and unfastening them. It is highly recommended to use a chair to properly wear motocross boots.
Belt
One of the most important pieces of equipment in the practice of motocross is the girdle. Although many believe that the girdle only serves us for those who have injuries or backaches, nothing is further from reality. The specific belt for motocross provides us with an optimal adjustment and protection of the area, although we must know how to properly put it on. To do this, it is not necessary to press too much the torso with the main closure of the girdle, but we must finish adjusting it by means of the lateral bands that it has. In this way, we achieve a perfect fit to the body, while allowing us a wide range of movements. We must also comment that the belt should not be in direct contact with the skin; To avoid that, we will use a thin or thermal inner shirt, as we have commented previously.
Overalls
The motocross bib is specially designed for the practice of this sport. It usually has detachable accessories in the chest area, in case we wear a cervical collar or not. In this regard, we must pay special attention to the compatibility of these two protection elements, as well as dispense with the accessory in question if we use the cervical collar. It is important that the protections do not overlap between them, since their designs must be adapted to the shape of our body and not to other protections that we can wear. As main functions, the bib will protect us both from possible falls with the motorcycle and from the impacts of stones and earth that can be dismissed from the rear wheel of other motorcycles.
Shirt
The motocross or off-road shirt can be placed above the bib or also below. We return to the same: if we want to extend the life of the bib, avoiding unnecessary wear, we will resort to a baggy shirt, a size larger than we usually wear, so that it goes over the bib and adapts correctly to our movements in progress.
Cervical collar
We are already having everything ready. For those who use the collar, we must disassemble it on one side, and carefully insert it around the neck, then close it and check that it is well fixed and that it does not bother us at any point. The collar should be tied with two ribbons that we will place below the armpits. Remember that depending on the bib we wear, we must dispense with the upper pieces, because we must remember that the protection elements should never overlap.
Helmet
We will put on the helmet making sure that the ventilation system is open or closed, depending on what we need at that time. We will also check that the support of the padding is correct and that, once placed, we have some freedom of movement with the cervical collar, as well as that it allows us to properly tie the helmet.
