Renewing the floor is a very delicate renovation. Why? Well because it’s the closest thing to brand new floor … but without moving! Before choosing the material, it is important to be clear about what you want to achieve with the new floor: lighter, create spaciousness, add warmth, modernise your home and work as an impact-resistant service. Knowing exactly what you are looking for, it will be much easier for you to get the material and its tonality.

And yes, it is true that only with a new floor the change is radical, but it is still a small work. So, in order to avoid unexpected surprises, we have gathered some of the most important questions you should know before undertaking the reform: the effects you can achieve, the amount of the moving company to store the furniture, the unexpected expenses… And also, the pros and cons of 5 different materials and their approximate cost.

More and more floors are installed without having to remove the previous pavement. Only with that you will see reduce the duration of the reform, debris, dust and noise (very important if you do not move during the works). But do not kid yourself, there is an inevitable part: remove the furniture and have the house upside down at least a couple of days.

  1. WOOD, THE WARMEST

Before betting on natural wood, you should ask yourself the following question: do I care that it is not always like the first day? If the answer is no, do not hesitate, because wood, as a natural product, is transformed as it ages.

Advantage. It is warm to the eye and touch and adds value to any space. It is ecological (make sure you have the FSC or PEFC certificate and the varnishes used are natural) and can be installed on the previous pavement, provided it is stable. It can be repaired without losing beauty and with minimal maintenance it can be a floor for a lifetime. If you choose a platform nailed to the ground, you also gain stability and minimise the noise of the tread.

Something to consider. As living matter that is, it is not an unalterable flooring, it evolves: it changes its tone, there are imperfections due to blows, scratches … Before deciding, you must value it.

  1. CERAMIC, VERY VERSATILE

If you are looking for an all-terrain floor, which does not require maintenance and is long-suffering, ceramic flooring is a very good option. Passage area with natural stone floor and white wooden beams.

Advantage. It is very versatile and adapts to any decorative style thanks to its huge range of designs and finishes that imitate from natural stones to metal or cement.

Something to consider. You will have to live with the boards, although XXL formats are already commercialised (in Porcelanosa there are 3 x 1 m). However, they are more expensive and delicate pieces to install, so it is convenient that a professional is in charge of handling them. Breaking one of these tiles can be very expensive.

  1. NATURAL STONE, UNIQUE AND FRESH TO THE TRACK

When to choose it? When you want a natural, elegant, durable and exclusive pavement, because no two are the same. You can choose it in different finishes, from raw or natural, which is very fashionable, to bright, which creates sophisticated and “luxurious” environments.

Advantage. It is a sustainable pavement; no toxic products are used neither in its extraction nor in its handling. It is hard and impact resistant – granite more than marble – easy to clean and can be installed on top of the previous one.

Something to consider. The polished finish loses its shine over time and to recover it you must polish it again. Marble, and especially limestones – very porous – are not recommended for the kitchen, as they are sensitive to stains and aggressive products. The granite is more suffered but, throughout the house, its marked drawings can get tired.

  1. LAMINATED FLOOR

Do you like the look of wood but are looking for a cheaper and more suffered option to spots and scratches? Laminated floor is undoubtedly your best option. But you should bear in mind that, although more economical, it is not as durable as wood.

Advantage. With the click system it is easy to install (in one day a floor of 100 m2 can be ready), it offers many finishes and is not discoloured by the sun.

Something to consider. Being floating, can produce a “drum effect” when walking, cannot be repaired and does not age.

  1. MICROCEMENT, A CONTINUOUS FLOOR

It is the perfect option if you are looking for a continuous and unified floor for the whole house. And goodbye to the meetings! In addition, you can even customise the colour.

Advantage. It is a continuous pavement and can be installed on the previous one – as long as it is stable – without having to lower the doors, since it usually has a thickness of about 2-3 mm. It is important to bear in mind that, the smaller the thickness, the greater its resistance, and not vice versa. Although there is a limited number of colours, you can make personalised variations. It is resistant to water and its application is handmade, so each work is unique. It can be easily repaired and comes in several finishes: matt, satin (the most recommended option), bright and rustic (with a rougher texture).

To consider. It is not a homogeneous surface but presents water. The walls acquire a silky appearance that “changes” colour and brightness depending on the incidence of light. It is a delicate material to the blows and can be scratched. And also crack with temperature changes.
